750 words; about a 4 minute read

Mission: The Messenger
Location: Shuttle Bay and Pilots' Office
Timeline: 0000-00-30 1030

Harris was on his monthly rounds. Where he met with the officers in various departments to chat about the enlisted under their command. It was his way of getting the pulse of the ship and learning where things needed to be improved. This month he decided to start with Flight Control and headed for the Shuttle Bay and the pilots' office. Once there he found the Assistant Flight Chief hard at work. "Lieutenant, mind if I have a word ma'am?" Harris said in his gruff voice with a smile.

Zoey wondered how the mission was going. Her beloved boyfriend was on the cold station. She was manning her station at strategic operations. Trying to ascertain the current location of several starships in the near systems. "Of course COB." Zoey said, as she locked out her station, and then gave her full and warm hearted attention to him.

"It has become a habit of mine to check in with the officers of various departments to see how the enlisted under their command are. Are there places we can improve, or become more efficient? That sort of thing. I do hope that they have your department running like a well oiled machine." Harris looked around for a moment as he took it all in. He realized that he had not been down to the Shuttle Bay in some time. With all the chaos of the time shift, and then settling the ship back down in their new circumstances it was like he had to reacquaint himself with the ship.

"It's not my team, but they seem to be operating pretty well." Zoey suggested, with a quirky smile on her face. She was impressed with this guy. He seemed genuinely concerned for enlisted personal on the ship. Which was very refreshing. There was some officers, that could careless about them.

"That is good to hear. I can tell you that you are well liked. I mean enlisted will talk..." Zim said with a smile. "How do you and Mr th'Zaanaq get along? I know that at times Andorians can be hard to get along with. They have a gruff demeanor, something that I have in common with them."

"Pretty well I think. I try to not to annoy as much." Zoey said, with a grin on her face. She was trying to down play the situation. In reality, she tried her best to give him a long leash, so they can both get their work down without stepping on each other toes.

Harris was stunned that this woman had nothing to say. Usually officers always had place that improvement was needed. "Well that is good to hear. Is there anything that you would like to see improved upon?" He was fishing now, but he wanted the woman to open up.

"I think we all have things we would like to improve on. But if you are talking from a team perspective. I am quite satisfied with their performances." Zoey pointed out to Zim, with a big grin on her face.

"Excellent! Thanks Lieutenant and if you ever need anything don't hesitate to ask." Zim beamed if all of his other check ins went as well as this one, this was going to be a great review.

"I will keep that in mind." Zoey said with a big grin. Deep down though, she was thinking, give me more capable officers and I will never need a favor.

Harris was about to leave when another thought occurred to him. "With the ship being out here on its own. What do you think about an emergency pilot program. I can round up the top candidates and you can train them up in piloting. This way should the need arise we will have a number of pilots ready willing and able to serve."

"The Emergency Hologram programs are a bit twitchy. I heard the private sector has had more success with them. But out here, all alone and short of crew." Zoey started to say, as she thought about it for a moment. "I think that would be a good idea chief." She said, with a warm hearted smile. Deep down she kicking herself, for not thinking of that.

"Great! Thanks Lieutenant. I will have a list on your desk by morning. Thanks for your time." Harris said as he made his way to leave on to the next department head.

"No problem Chief. Stop by anytime." Zoey said, as the scene starts to fade away.
