Mission: Prologue

Using their person transporters, S'ressa and Elara transported to sickbay. "Please make yourself comfortable on a biobed Elara. I want to check you out medically."

Elara nodded and settled on the bed closest to her. "Just a fair warning. I have quite the telepathy. I apologize beforehand if I learn something I'm not supposed to know", she said. She was already picking up things here and there. Some curiosity, but what she sensed the most was the woman's nature. Which was kind and caring. She had clearly gone into medical to help and to heal people.

"Thank you for that Elara. That's a good thing to know. I admit I'm curious about you. Dual heritage can be good but also tricky Mixing biologies can be good or bad. Judging by what I've seen of you, you seem to be ok."

"Define "ok"", Elara said with a tired smile. "Growing up in an orphanage wasn't exactly perfect, but some bloodwork in my early years found that i am of El-Aurian and Betazoid lineage. They found no relatives, but it explained why I was knowing as much as I did at that young an age. At least the teachers and caretakers taught me what they could. The rest is just... background noise unless i focus on it", she told the woman.

"I see. That must have been rough for you. So empathic or telepathic or both? And I do want to add, I hope if you have any concerns, you will come to me as I am both doctor and councilor. I'd also like to be your friend."

Elara smiled wearily. "Both. While it helps sate my near-endless curiosity and need for knowledge, it is annoying at times. Always background noise", she said as she looked at the other woman. "I've never had a friend before", she admitted. "In the orphanage it was pretty much a competition to get attention. I recall several incidents where some kids were sent to the nearby hospital for injuries. After I aged out of the system, I didn't know how to approach people. I'm still a rookie when it comes to being social. The other kids there weren't making it easy".

"I can only imagine! Still, you always have time to learn. You will make mistakes. That's inevitable. But I urge you to keep trying. Put yourself out there.
You will learn in time you will get better. If you try you will make friends.
I'd like to consider myself your friend."

Elara smiled. "I'd like that", she said. She wasn't exactly sure how to proceed from this point in their talk. Deciding on a change of topic, she asked, "What made you go in the medical career?".

"That's easy. My mother. I have looked up to her as long as I can remember. I decided I wanted to be a doctor like her and help people. So I did and here I am on a great adventure."

"Sounds wonderful", Elara said. She meant it. Thinking back to how Wilkan had found her, she realized that, while she didn't have parents to look up to, Wilkan had given her a purpose. He had also, unwillingly, given her a "toy" box of outdated technology. She had been dismantling the tech and put them together again. Even fixed a few. "Wilkan found me some years back. I don't know how he found me, but I very much appreciate that he brought me with him. That, and I found a slew of outdated and broken equipment in box somewhere I most likely wasn't supposed to look", she told the other woman with an awkward grin. "I did fix some of them. But I'm near certain that Wilkan wasn't expecting that".

"Sounds like you have quite a gift elara! You should be proud of yourself. I hope wilkan is too! A gift like that can come in handy.I think you are a very special person and I certainly want to get to know you bettter." She stufddied the young woman. Yes she was an interesting one.

"Technology makes sense. If there's an error, there's a reason. Logic makes sense. I've struggled with bonding with others. People can be... chaotic at times", Elara told the other woman. "But I'd like to get to know you better. You seem incredibly kind". She fell silent, unsure whether she should add more or not.

S'reessa chuckled. "Oh people are chaotic often! However I think you should keep trying. Sometimes a little chaos is good.
Not to mention the more you practice the better you will be!"

"That's true", Elara admitted. "I think I should start paying attention to social interactions. Might give me some pointers". She felt herself smile. S'reessa was a truly kind person. "I'll give it a try. Might take me a while though. If I'm going to do this, I want to get to know people without too much information through my telepathy and empathy. "That's going to be a headache. I guess I'll have to try to focus on people further away to give the people closer to me some space".

"It will take some work, yes but I will believe it will be worth it! Just keep working at it. The more practice you get the better you will be at it."

"Nothing worth anything is free, nor easy", Elara said with a nod. "I'm going to try. Might be hard, but it seems easier to fix 5 of Wilkan's discarded gadgets than learning social cues. I did fix the gadgets, though that's not the point", she added with a grin. "One was an old comm badge. That one took me 5 days to fix. I left it in his office with the note that he should try having things fixed instead of discarding them. He didn't give me a lecture. I think we was too busy preparing for the move to the Sulaco to tell me off. He wore it 2 days ago. I managed to enhance the range a bit. He did get me a box of discarded technology with the note "projects". I am pretty certain that tech is to keep me out of the technology station's electronics".

S'reessa chuckled. "That seems quite likely! Still you made a good point. Don't discard it if it can be repaired. I think your talents are going to be very valuable around here but keep working on those social skills an don't be afraid to admit you don't know that you're still learning to be social. And most importantly I'm here if you need me."

"Thanks", Elara said with a smile. And she meant it. "I really appreciate your support and kindness".

"My door is always open for you Elara."

Elara smiled. "Thank you", she said.
